Few things satisfy me more than being asked for ID at the LCBO. I've spent most of my adulthood taking really good care of my skin. Having people think I could be 21 feels like a return on my (massive) investment in skincare products and services.

This post is about sundamage and prevention. You're here because you want to know how to achieve beautiful, youthful skin without having to sacrafice that hot girl summertime glow. These are my answers.

Step One: SPF

Some people hate the scent and the feeling of it on their skin. Find one you can tolerate and/or mix it into your foundation. Make this a part of your daily makeup routine (all year long) so that its not an added step but worked into what you'd do normally. Your skin is your largest organ. You need to be proactive in taking care of it. That includes your neck and hands which are a tell tale sign of age. Ask any plastic surgeon. It costs way more to be reactive than proactive when it comes to your skin.

If you currently have a sunburn you need a jar of Egyptian Magic the best (all natural) product that relieves pain, promotes healing and reduces the appearance of scars.

My favourite tinted moisturizor is the Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra Fluid SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen. It has a non-greasy texture that I love and its weightless. I use it on set (on men and women) and it doesn't leave a white cast (on most skin types).

For dark complexions I like the La Roche Posey Anthelios Ultra-Fluid SPF 50+ Facial Sunscreen.  I mix it into a water based foundation (in a color that best matches the skin tone I'm working on). It dries matte and is oil free which means I won't have to worry about shine or clogged pores.

*It also photographs beautifully and can be used under wedding makeup without the risk of flash back in wedding photos.

Step Two: IPL

If it's too late and you've been baking in the sun for the past 15+ years you need to visit a dermatologist and a medical esthetician. If you feel overwhelmed while reading this I apologize, but I never told you this was going to be cheap. I will tell you that it is worth it. A dermatologist can determine a lot, including skin cancer. As scary as that sounds you're much better off finding out early and treating it immediatly. If your issue is merly sun damage that shit can be lasered off. It doesn't feel nice but it's no brazillian wax either.

If you're Toronto based, I highly recommend Lucy Cabral who is an educator at George Brown College. If you're lucky, you might be able to book her for services. * Please note the cost of her services are not what the school charges if you book with a student who is still learning.

I'm also jonsing to visit Natasha Tsagogeorgas- owner of Rewind Skin Co. who is a non-invasive medical esthetican. Natasha (like myself) is a girl boss who offers bomb product lines and jaw dropping services. Ask her about Biologique Recherche and Forma treatments. Why? Sundamaged skin is notoriously saggy, espeically over time. That's why.

Step Three: Sunless Tanning

If you insist on being tan there are sunless tanning options. The best being an airbrush tan. If you're Toronto based I really love Jennifer Wasser's work. She is the owner of Beloved.Tan. and offers services in her studio and mobile.

For an at home alternative I love Nuda Self Tanner a hydrating self tanning lotion (designed in Canada) that offers a natural, healthy-looking tan that lasts for days. This self tanning lotion will give you a natural glow on your face and body. The intensity of the result will vary depending on the quantity of product that is applied. For your first application, I recommend you apply a light layer and adjust the quantity if needed in order to increase the intensity of your tan.

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs LotionI used this lotion regularly on Lacey Chabert  while filming Hallmark's Crossword Mystery Series. It's affordable and comes in a variety of flattering shades whereas other brands can look orange and streaky. It hides brusies, blends beautifully, doesn't stink or stain your hands, ankles or knees and it makes you look alive. I wouldnt use this product on your face and I prefer the lotion formula to the spray. I consider this a body makeup that I only use on legs that have been exfoliated and shaved recently.

Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze and GlowI have used this powder for weddings, photoshoots, movies, tv and on myself for almost four years. It's without a doubt the most beautiful, seamless bronzer I've ever bought. If you're trying to achieve a bronze and highlighted look a la Gisele Bundchen or Kate Moss this is a serious hero product that now comes in a darker shade for warmer complexions. If you're not confident in applying makeup I filmed a tutorial many moons ago when I was knowledgeable but still an amateur.

Step Four: Your Diet

I'm not a doctor but I do know that a daily vitamin, probiotics and walking the dog have done wonders for me. Your insides are reflected on the outside. I drink an obscene ammount of water. Enough that my mother took me to the doctors as a child, concerned that I might be diabetic. I'm not, I love water and that I think is a big reason why I've never broken out. That and genetics.

I do my best to replacing starch and sugar with green smoothies high in plant based protein and rice milk. When it comes to cravings I want salt and starch rather than sweets... but that's a different blog post.
