Winter travel can be both exciting and challenging. The combination of dry air, cold temperatures, and unpredictable travel conditions puts our beauty routines to the test. If you want to look and feel your best while on the go, you're in luck! I’ve curated a list of must-have beauty products specifically designed for winter travel. With these essentials in your suitcase, you can embrace the season with confidence and style.
Here are my Beauty Essentials for Winter Travel to keep your skin looking fresh and hydrated during your travels.
Hydrating Skincare Essentials
A rich moisturizer is essential for winter trips. Look for one filled with effective ingredients. My go-to is Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre. It's travel-friendly and loved by many, including dermatologists.
This specially formulated lotion is quite versatile. When you don’t have enough space for numerous products, throw it in your travel bag and use it as a primer, moisturizer, and makeup remover. It also reduces irritation after shaving!
If you're planning a destination vacation you'll likely want a lightweight formula. I've included that further into this blog post.
Hydrating Face Mist
A hydrating face mist can be your best friend for lengthy flights or sudden weather changes.
It delivers a refreshing burst of hydration and helps to revive your makeup.
I recommend the Living Libations Rose Glow Complexion Mist. It's decadence to drench dry skin and tone uneven texture.
It not only hydrates but is also loved for its soothing properties, and calm, pleasant scent.
Lip Balm
In winter, chapped lips can become a constant annoyance. A high-quality lip balm is essential. Choose one that contains nourishing oils for extra moisture.
I particularly love the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, which offers ultra-hydration.
My clients rave about its ability to heal and moisturize lips overnight once I've turned them onto it.
Be aware that if you do purchase a pot, your friends and family might become addicted and try to steal it from you.
Makeup Must-Haves
Let’s shift focus to makeup. With the right products, you can achieve a glamorous look that lasts even in cold weather.
A tinted moisturizer is a game changer for winter trips, providing both coverage and hydration. Ensure it has SPF for sun protection, especially if outdoor activities are on your agenda.
Elta MD is the lightweight formula I mentioned earlier. It's an excellent choice—that gives a beautiful, natural finish.
I'm quite pale in winter so I use the untinted formula unless I have a tan but I've used both, they are equally amazing.
EltaMD UV Daily Tinted has hyaluronic acid to boost moisture retention and diminish fine lines. This lightweight moisturizer with UV protection can be worn alone or under makeup.
*The Skin Cancer Foundation also recommends this product as an effective broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Antioxidant protection combats skin-aging free radicals associated with ultraviolet (UV) and infrared radiation (IR).
Hyaluronic Acid increases skin smoothness, and softness and decreases wrinkles
Glides on easily and absorbs quickly into the skin
UVA/UVB sun protection
Fragrance-free, paraben-free, sensitivity-free and noncomedogenic
Cream Blush
Beauty Essentials for Winter Travel
During winter, powder blush can appear dull and lifeless. Switch to a cream blush for a natural flush of colour. When it comes to travel, maximizing space is key. Consider incorporating multitasking products into your routine.
My favourite cream blush is from Fitglow Beauty, a pre-set palette, made in North America that includes natural, hydrating, nutrient-rich, creamy lip and cheek tints!
There are four shades in each palette ( and different colours depending on which palette you choose).
The Freshly Picked Palette: Mauve Berry, Sun Peach (soft peach), Watermelon (rose), Fig (raisin rose).
Healthy Bronzed Glow Palette: Bronzed Earth (rich chocolate bronze), Bronzed Sand (golden bronze), Terracotta Glow (golden bronze illuminator), Champagne Glow (champagne cream illuminator).
Heather Fields Palette: Lavender Plum Cream (gold plum shimmer), Heather Cream (lavender shimmer), Rose Gold Cream (rose gold shimmer), Mink Cream (cool taupe plum).
Waterproof Mascara
When you're travelling, a good mascara is crucial—especially if there's a chance of rain or snow.
It keeps your lashes looking full and defined without smudging.
Vegan GoodLash Mascara is my top pick.
It lasts well throughout the day and provides an impressive increase in lash volume. This is a semi-waterproof mascara that is lifestyle-tested for everyday adventures.
It's also known as a multitasking mascara that enhances the look of lashes on a day-to-day basis, with potent vitamins and antioxidants.
Lupine Protein helps rejuvenate and condition lashes preventing breakage while the Organic Rice Bran nourishes and softens lashes. Horsetail Plant Extract promotes lash health by strengthening existing hair.
Haircare Essentials for Winter Travel
Managing your hair during winter travel can be a challenge due to varying humidity levels.
Here are my favourite hair-care products to help you keep your mane under control.
Leave-In Conditioner
A leave-in conditioner can tackle frizz and provide essential moisture. Opt for a lightweight formula that works on wet or dry hair. Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In-Treatment is a fantastic option, addressing multiple hair concerns and easy to pack.
This cream offers thermal protection up to 450°F.
The formula prevents up to 88% of split ends, for hair that is hydrated, supple and shiny.
The moisturizer strengthens and protects the vitality of the hair.
I was introduced to Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In-Treatment after having an all-over lighting service at Samantha Cusick Salon in central London. I was so pleased I bought the treatment before I got back to Canada. I gave up the pro discount and paid in pounds to own this product immediately.
Travel-Sized Dry Shampoo
If you find yourself short on time, a travel-sized dry shampoo can come to the rescue.
This handy product absorbs excess oil and adds volume. I always carry Klorane Dry Shampoo, it’s a lifesaver for quickly refreshing your hair. This brand doesn't test on animals and it's formulated without:
Parabens
Phthalates
SLS, SLES
Triclosan
Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde Releasing Agents
Hydroquinone
The Nettle formula provides freshness, softness and volume to those prone to greasy hair, without irritating the scalp. I've tried a lot of dry shampoo that didn't work and gave me migraines, but this one is a winner if you're prone to oily roots.
Hair Oil
Winter's dryness and extreme heat exposure while on vacation can take a toll on your hair, making a nourishing hair oil necessary.
Davines Oi Oil excels in this area, offering a blend that many find deeply moisturizing while leaving hair soft and smelling divine. The ingredients in this oil are natural, eco-friendly and animal cruelty-free.
I use this oil on set a lot because it doesn't weigh down blow-outs or curls created with a hot tool as other styling products can. It also comes in a mini size.
If your hair is fine, apply a very small amount to your ends for added hydration and shine. Then smooth flyaways and frizz with whatever is left on your hands.
Face Wipes
I love clean towels. They are disposable and made of premium viscose sourced from sustainable eucalyptus plantations.
For quick clean-ups and makeup removal on busy travel days, these face wipes are invaluable. They are not pre-treated or moistened, so you can use them with whatever routine is currently working for you instead of relying on traditional wipes that can be heavily perfumed and astringent
Clean Towels ensure your face is spared from bacteria commonly found on normal towels that are used communally in hotels and resorts.
The problem with regular towels is that the abrasive texture is not ideal for the skin on our faces. The roughness of these fibres can damage your skin barrier, and it might make your skin issues worse.
If you're acne-prone I also suggest you try using Clean Towels at home when you cleanse daily.
Additional Travel Tips for Beauty Lovers
Alongside great products, effective strategies can enhance your winter travel beauty routine.
Here are helpful tips:
Pack in Travel-sized Containers
Ditch the full-sized products and opt for travel-sized containers. These lighter options save space and comply with airline liquid regulations.
Stay Hydrated- drinking ample water not only benefits your overall health but is crucial for maintaining supple skin during winter travel.
Your Secret to Winter Beauty
Incorporate these essential beauty items into your packing list, and you can keep your skin moisturized, your makeup fresh, and your hair looking fabulous.
Remember, it’s not just about the destination but also about enjoying the journey—and looking great while doing it!
Happy travels!
