As winter rolls on, many of us can feel our skin becoming dry and irritated. The cold weather can take a toll, and to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, it’s crucial to have a skincare routine. Surprisingly, many people don't have a routine at all. This post covers five essential products that can help prevent dry skin and provides tips to maintain a glowing complexion throughout the colder months.
Understanding Winter Skin Challenges
Winter drastically reduces the moisture levels in your skin, often causing it to feel tight and uncomfortable. For some, this can even trigger flare-ups of conditions like eczema. A tailored skincare routine is vital because it can protect and nourish your skin, ensuring it remains healthy despite the harsh weather. Let’s explore five key products that should be in your winter skincare arsenal.
1. Ultra-Hydrating Moisturizer
A potent moisturizer is the backbone of any winter skincare routine. Look for options that include ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. These elements play a crucial role in locking in moisture and supporting the skin’s barrier.
Product Recommendation: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream stands out for its combination of ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
This formulation delivers long-lasting hydration and works effectively to restore your skin barrier. The non-greasy texture makes it versatile enough for both face and body use.
CeraVe is commonly requested in the makeup trailer, by actors who only want the (best) basics, nothing fussy, just effective options that aren't greasy, sticky or full of strong perfumes.
Dynamic Duos
Egyptian Magic Cream is something I highly recommend.
It's all natural and I like to apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin. I massage it in for a few minutes, and then I apply a thicker layer of CeraVe to lock in the moisture.
Keep in mind there is no point in moisturizing dead skin, so exfoliate regularly for best results!

2. Nourishing Facial Oil
Adding a facial oil to your skincare routine can greatly enhance hydration levels during winter. These oils not only seal in moisture but also protect your skin against damaging environmental factors.
Product Recommendation:
This rosehip seed oil is rich in vitamins C and E, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. Its lightweight yet deeply moisturizing properties make it ideal for layering under a moisturizer or using solo for a healthy glow.
How to Use
Apply a few drops of the facial oil after cleansing.
Following this step with your moisturizer helps lock in the hydration throughout the day.
3. Treatments
An AHA serum with lactic acid that targets the look of pores, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots while clinically improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Product Recommendation: Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One AHA Lactic Acid Treatment
If you have sensitive skin, apply one to three pumps on clean, dry skin and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then rinse well and pat dry.
Then apply a moisturizer!
I use it 2-3 times a week and saw results in approximately two weeks which is the standard for most skin care products available to non-professionals.
I tend to be allergic to a lot of lactic treatments. I have incredibly sensitive skin, but I did not react to this product.
4. An Overnight Lip Treatment
Lips are made of skin too! Look for items enriched with nourishing ingredients that provide hydration while you sleep.
Product Recommendation: Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask launched about seven years ago, during the meteoric rise of K- Beauty (aka Korean skincare) and it's been a must-have ever since.
I carry two or three in my professional kit: one on my vanity, one in my cosmetic bag and another in my purse. It's great after being out in the sun or on a ski hill. It's also a favourite of supermodel Kate Moss if my opinion isn't enough to sell it to you on it.
I've gifted many to friends and family because it's amazing (when used regularly). I also really like their glowy balms that come in a squeeze tube.
Tips for Usage
Apply a layer of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask as the final step in your night routine.
I use it in the day as well as at night. This product creates a light barrier to prevent moisture loss while you sleep.
5. Gentle Exfoliator
To prevent flakiness, incorporating a liquid exfoliator for your face, into your winter routine is essential.
Product Recommendation:
Lotion P50T is a multi-purpose lotion which exfoliates, purifies, cleanses, sanitizes and regenerates the skin.
It is THE cornerstone of Biologique Recherche's skin reconditioning method and has been hailed as the "Holy Grail" of skin products around the world.
For the first week, soak a cotton pad (pre-moistened with water) with Lotion P50T and apply to the face, neck and cleavage, patting upward gently without rubbing. The following days, soak a dry cotton pad with Lotion P50T.
I buy all of my Biologique products from Natasha of Rewind Skin Co.
Product Comparison
Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, while effective, may be too harsh for some people this season.
I've used both and found my skin looked a lot more luminous after using Lotion P50T. It wasn't stripped of natural oils, it is a more expensive option but I absolutely love it.
Practical Tips for Combating Dry Skin in Winter
In addition to these essential products, keep these practical tips in mind to maintain a healthy complexion during winter:
Stay Hydrated: Drink adequate water daily—aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses to help keep your skin hydrated.
Avoid Hot Showers: Although hot showers are tempting, they can strip away natural oils. Choose shorter, lukewarm showers instead.
Use a Humidifier: Incorporating a humidifier in your home can effectively restore moisture in the air, helping your skin remain hydrated.
Sunscreen is Essential: Even in winter, UV rays can harm your skin. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, regardless of cloud cover.
Maintaining Your Radiance
